I have always loved decorating, art, I love to paint, I love furniture, fabrics, and fashion. I’ve done faux finishes in my home, though I’ve never taken formal classes, and have decorated a few friends apartments.
I love the odd, unusual and creative arts. Metal, glass, wood works.
I’ve heard there’s a difference between a home designer and a decorator. How would one start out? I am taking classes here and there, but it’s not the complete picture. What type of companies would you work or intern for? I’d love to be on the cutting edge of unique and unusual things.
This would be my second career in life, so I’d like to do it sooner rather than later.
Hence, I love party planning. It’s like decorating to me, but you get to be more dramatic and change it often. I’ve done a few bridal showers and a few parties, but on a small scale.
Can you make a living at it, or is it more of a hobby? And do you have to be in a large city? I am in a midsize but growing town.
Thanks
First, focus on getting a degree in Interior Design. It sounds like this is a better focus for you. Talk to your professors about jobs and potential opportunities. Those professors are your KEY to finding an interneship sometimes.
Party planning is NOT like decorating. There are parts of that include decorating, but they aren’t the same. You need a different education and license to be a wedding or party planner.
Both Decorating and planning HAVE to be a full time career. Both require a lot of time, effort, and calling. It’s easier to find a job in a larger city.

ReviewFinally, finally, a practical home-decorating book for the reader who is not a millionaire! Rather than call in a professional design consultant to tell you which walls “must go” and throwing out everything you own in favor of new and expensive designer fabrics, furniture, and fixtures, Ward starts with what you already have and makes dramatic transformations by arrangement, use of color, and a few inexpensive additions of objects or materials. Her idea is to use what you already have and like, and operate on a budget you can afford to make your home more satisfying and aesthetically pleasing to you without being a slave to passing trends, fads, and radical transformations that end up making you feel like a stranger in your own home.
Among the many tips and guidelines, Ward starts with the top 10 decorating mistakes that professionals all know about, but that anyone can recognize and fix. She covers diagnosing problems that jar the eyes, offers suggestions on items to banish and others to borrow from elsewhere in the home to create more visual appeal, talks about how to shop for furniture that will work with what you already own, offers tips for new homeowners and people just starting out to make older furniture work in new spaces, and covers the kinds of dramatic improvements possible through the use of the right artwork, accessories, and lighting. This is a great gift book for newlyweds, new homeowners, or anyone interested in creative, lively home Decorating without breaking the bank. –Mark A. Hetts

Making your next batch of sugar cookies stand out has never been so easy! Professional creative chef Cricket Azima for the Betty Crocker kitchens demos two adorable and fun ideas to add flare to your next batch of Sugar Cookies. Don’t forget to grab the kids for these recipes!
Recipes:
Pop Art Cookies
1 pouch (1 lb 1.5 oz) Betty Crocker® sugar cookie mix
1/3 cup butter or margarine, softened
2 tablespoons Gold Medal® all-purpose flour
1 egg
12 wooden sticks with rounded ends
1 container (1 lb) Betty Crocker® Rich & Creamy frosting (any white variety)
Food colors in desired colors
Assorted candy decorations
1.Heat oven to 375°F. In medium bowl, stir cookie mix, butter, flour and egg until dough forms. Roll dough on floured surface until about 1/4 inch thick. Cut with 3-inch round cookie cutter. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Carefully insert a wooden stick into side of each cookie.
2.Bake 9 to 11 minutes or until edges are light golden brown. Cool 1 minute before removing from cookie sheet. Cool completely, about 30 minutes.
3.Divide frosting among 4 small bowls. Tint frosting in 3 of the bowls with different color of food color. Reserve some of the tinted frostings for piping on designs. Frost cookies with remaining white and tinted frostings. For piping, place each tinted frosting in small resealable food-storage plastic bag; snip off tiny corner of bag. Pipe frostings on cookies in desired designs. Decorate with candy decorations.
