Do you need a degree in Interior design to become an interior designer?

Posted by admin on February 19th, 2012 and filed under Interior Design | 6 Comments »

I have a degree in Literary Arts and in corporate PR. How do I go about pursuing a career in interior design? I am very good at Decorating & design, it is my passion and I have always received numerous compliments from almost everyone who has visited my home.

Degrees are not necessary in most professions, however it’s usually the door opener or invitation and it will definitely give you an advantage over the competition.

However, if you are absolutely brilliant in what you do, actions speak louder than words. Basically build a very strong portfolio, one which you can show and be proud of. In lots of design industries, portfolios will speak louder than a degree, so it’s definitely not a hopeless cause.

Just stay on top of your game and visit various Interior Design communities online to gain more knowledge and inspiration.

Interior design ideas for a working British style Phone Booth (the red one) into a living/rec. room?

Posted by admin on February 19th, 2012 and filed under Interior Design | 2 Comments »

I once saw a working phone booth, with door and all, incorporated into a living room in an Interior Design magazine. I am currently planning designs for my basement-party-lounge room, and think this design element would be a great conversation piece for guests. (also serves a purpose) Please post any links to articles or pictures of something similar to this, thanks!

You can do anything you want design wise as long as you are able and willing to pay for it. I think the concept would be great fun in a rec room but not a living room. If you can find one all you would have to do is have it wired to your telephone lines.

► Nadia’s tips on interior design ideas for the kitchen
○ Do your homework – on you!
First things first, start researching. Look through magazines and design books and take photos of kitchens you like, and ask questions of your friends.

Keep everything together in a binder so you can refer to it as you go through the process.

○ Visualize your interior design ideas with 3D design software
There are so many options that your kitchen project may seem overwhelming at first. This is where a good design program can really help like Homestyler so you can actually see how things will look.

Begin by entering your kitchen’s dimensions and cabinets according to your current floor plan. Then you can begin exploring your interior design ideas. See how different kinds of flooring, countertop surfaces, cabinet colors, wall colors and textures from specific manufacturers look.

○ Choosing kitchen appliances
Take stock of your daily and occasional kitchen needs. Do you cook a lot of meals or entertain much? Knowing how you will you use your kitchen will help you determine the types and grades of appliances to consider.

○ Selecting fixtures
Make sure fixtures look good and function well with the Interior Design and layout ideas you have. Your kitchen needs to be equally as functional as it is beautiful. Keep the work triangle in mind that goes from the sink to the refrigerator to the stove.

○ Get feedback and ask for ideas
Share your kitchen designs with friends and family and print out your design and take with you to a showroom to get advice from the pros as well.

Work at a furniture store, tile store, paint store. Living Traditions: Interiors by Matthew Patrick Smyth

Posted by admin on February 9th, 2012 and filed under Interior Design | No Comments »

interior design
Product DescriptionClassic style and impeccable attention to detail are hallmarks of the work of Interior Designer Matthew Patrick Smyth. His comfortable, timeless rooms are tailored to fit his clients’ personalities and lifestyles, whether they are dynamic young couples with children or cultured art collectors. Smyth masterfully blends contemporary pieces with antiques to endow each space with a sense of solidity and history while maintaining a completely fresh, modern sensibility.

Smyth credits his mentor David Easton for teaching him how to see the intrinsic value of any given piece and to successfully mix furnishings with similar lines, materials, and forms even when they are products of different centuries. Easton also embedded in Smyth a love for travel—leading to the designer’s devotion to all things French that permeates his work. Smyth opened his own firm in New York in 1987 and now works with clients around the globe. His designs—characterized by refined, flawless interior architecture—are seen in grand Shelter Island mansions, classically proportioned San Francisco townhouses, and demure Parisian pied-à-terres alike.

In this lavishly illustrated volume, Smyth reveals his own design tips, rules, and approaches to meeting challenges offered by uniquely shaped spaces. He focuses on editing collections to better showcase individual works, the personal nature of color selection, adding—or restoring—historical references, and finishing a space off with glorious, often unexpected fabrics and trims. Over two hundred color photographs showcase a wide variety of styles, from a nature-infused Aspen vacation home to the quintessential Upper East Side apartment to a London flat that smoothly blends its owner’s inherited collection of Renaissance art with fine Indian pieces.
