What is the traditional interior design for a home built 1920?
I’d like to know what was typical in Interior Design for a home in this period. I’m buying a cottage style home built in 1920, and I’d love to integrate some of the traditional style with my contemporary taste. What was popular in color, line, etc? Any suggestions for websites that I can check out would be so appreciated =) Thanks!
Here are a few links to give you visuals.
Design would be significant to the area and local resources. …For instance if there was a rock quarry nearby you would see stone walks. 1920 was the onset of the "Honeymoon Cottage" in the beach communities. You will find heavily influenced "Edwardian Period" and the beginnings of "Art Deco". Egyptian and oriental influences were common. Black and reds were used in coloring and Bright green, jade, turquoise, eau-de-nil, mint or peacock blue or deep blue, are all really gorgeous colors of the time, and contrast nicely with a pale grey. The Arts and Crafts era post WW1 was in swing. Or you can replicate the highly sought after Gustav Stickley homes. The rich had Greene and Greene, Frank Lloyd Wright and others as their Arts & Crafts-style architects. The poorer folk built Sears and Aladdin "kit" homes.

Sabrina Soto Home Design: A Layer-by-Layer Approach to Turning Your Ideas into the Home of Your Dreams

Review
Exclusive Home Decoration Tips from author Sabrina Soto
Choosing artwork for your home can be tricky and tiresome! But here are some simple suggestions to help relieve the pressure.
- Keep the style of your décor in mind when making your selection. You don’t want your artwork to clash with existing items in your room; so, if your room is traditional, stick with traditional artwork. The same applies for modern, rustic or contemporary rooms.
- Buy artwork that is proportional to other pieces in your room. You want to create a sense of visual balance. Be careful not to choose pieces that are too large or too small for your space. A good rule of thumb is that your art work should be 60% to 75% the width of what you are hanging it over. So if your sofa is 80″ wide then your art work should be no more than 60″ wide.
- If you cannot afford large pieces of art, choose a series of smaller pieces that you can hang together in rows or collages.
- Avoid problems with glare by skipping the fancy frames and glass; unframed art is really popular right now and will add more depth to your space. Look for canvases stretched on frames, or prints on wood or metal backings. This will making shopping a little easier and often reduces the price of the piece.
- Always hang your art at eye level, no matter how tall your walls are. This will ensure the artwork will draw just the right amount of attention.
- Most importantly, buy what makes you happy; buy what you love!
What are some cheap interior design ideas?
Moving into my new apartment and would like some ideas on how to paint, create furniture, anything really. I’m really into DIY so those ideas will get preference. I also would like it to look very modern, minimalist, and simple. Any links to websites or blogs that deal with DIY indie modern Interior Design would be greatly appreciated.
Get OOPS! paint at Home Depot or Lowe’s, it’s the paint that someone didn’t like the color and they are selling it very cheaply. Use tape to create square geometric shapes on your walls. Paint the shapes and remove the tape to create cool contemporary wall art.
