Idea for this cupcake was found in Betty Crocker’s “Big
Book of Cupcakes”
This is supposed to look like an old fashioned chocolate malt drink you could buy at your local 5 and dime or diner.

Hi, my name is Amanda Oakleaf. I am owner, head baker, decorator of Amanda Oakleaf Cakes in Winthrop, Massachusetts where we do custom cakes of all kinds — wedding cakes, birthday cakes, sculpted cakes. Anything you can think of we can make it into a cake. And today I will be talking to you about cake Decorating. So, it’s actually a fondant-gum paste mix. And that will allow, once it’s dry it will hold its shape really well. Much better than fondant on its own. So, I have a peach color, skin color, kneaded. You just want to knead it into a nice smooth ball. So you kind of want to pinch a size off that’s going to be appropriate for the top of the cake. So that’s going to be the body. And whatever you are not using of the fondant-gum paste mix, you want to keep wrapped up in plastic so that it doesn’t dry out. And then keep a foam to hold the shape. We’ll put a little divot here with your thumb. And that will be a good spot for the head to sit. He needs some legs. Pinch off a smaller piece. To make them equal size, we’ll split it into two right down the middle before we shape the leg. So, it’s easy to always start with a ball and then flatten it out and shape it how you need it after wards. And it will be like he’s laying on his stomach. And then with your hand, just shape a little foot. To have the foot that curves around and if you can’t, you know, if your fingers are too hard, you can use one of the sculpting fondant tools to kind of create creases, and folds, and bends. And kind of pinch the side. This is what goes underneath him, and then this is what shows on the side. And then we want to do the same thing, only opposite, with the other side. Those are legs, and it needs arms. Same thing, start with the big ball and cut it in half so you have two equal pieces. And then the arms are actually going to come up and be under his head. Bend it a little, and then you’ll want to just pinch off a little part on the end for the hand. Kind of roll it between your fingers and then you can flatten it.
The petal technique was found in the book “cupcakes, cookies & pie, oh my!” by Richardson and Tack.

Candy melting wafers come in all sorts of different colours but all taste about the same, a bit like white chocolate (except for the chocolate coloured ones that taste like artificial chocolate).
They can be purchased at the Bulk Barn if you live in Ontario or other provinces in Canada (see their website for store finder).
They can also be found at certain craft stores and at stores like Walmart in certain areas.
They can also be purchased online.
Examples:
They cost about $6 a pound here in Canada at he Bulk Barn.
I melt mine at 50% power in the microwave and will sometimes add a bit of shortening to the mixture to thin it out.
You can dye white chocolate and white candy melts but you must use oil based colours (available in certain craft store and online)

Leftover candy melts can be reused, just let them harden and melt them again. I let mine harden in a plastic bag in a thin layer, then just break of the pieces from the plastic and put it into a container.
****WINNERS OF THE 100TH CUPCAKE GIVEAWAY****
There were over 1100 entries!!! Amazing
This is the first time that I try using the email method for a contest entry. It worked very well and was very easy to organize and pick the winners, however, I forgot to ask people for their youtube usernames so that I could announce them publicly!
I have sent emails to the five winners asking for their usernames and as soon as get them will be able to share them with you all (if they say it is okay of course).

I’ve decided to do a cupcake Decorating series and will be posting them every once and a while.
This is titled cupcakes video #2 because I’ve added an old video on how to make vampire bat cupcakes to the playlist and that one will be #1.
How to make two kinds of panda cupcakes.
I based these on photos I found on the internet combined with my own twists.
Hello Cupcake uses a mini cupcake for the panda head, that’s cute too.

This will be the second (and last for this year) Father’s day cupcake. I saw a photo of a BBQ cake and then designed this cupcake, but then found “my” design on this website, not so original I guess, lol.
They give alternatives to different kind of food in this one (pork chops, skewers) and they use chocolate icing with orange sprinkles to make the “coals”. This is a good idea and I think was the missing “something” I was looking for.
They also use a toothpick and make “grill marks” on the food with black food colour, I also wish I would have done this too!
How to make monkey cupcakes two ways.
Can easily be converted into “girl monkeys” or even into Abu the monkey from Disney’s Aladdin movie.
Found the ideas for the cupcakes here:
I know it is inevitable that I get the question, what if I don’t have caramels or nilla wafers?
You can re-create the monkey face shape with light brown frosting or you can use starburst candies for a funky coloured monkey. Fondant or gumpaste is also an option.
You can also use sliced almonds (with or without the brown “skin” on them) for the ears.
I also didn’t mention that I added eyebrows to the second monkey to soften his “glare” he was scaring me a little, lol!!
I also added some frosting details to Abu’s hat.
