How To Decorate Easter Eggs

Make your Easter eggs little oval works of art.

To complete this How-To you will need:

Eggs
A saucepan
Newspapers
Old clothes
Large paper cups
Vinegar
Dye tablets or food coloring
Wax crayon
Tape or rubber bands
Stickers or rubber cement
An egg dipper, slotted spoon, or tongs
Empty egg cartons
Fruits and vegetables for natural dyes
Vegetable oil

Step 1: Hard-boil the eggs

Put eggs in a saucepan, add water until they’re covered, and gently bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for ten minutes. Remove from the heat completely and add very cold water to stop the cooking process.

Step 2: Cover up

Put newspapers over your table or workspace so you don’t get dye on it, and change into something you won’t mind getting stained. Decorating Easter eggs can get messy!

Step 3: Ready the dye

Fill some large paper cups halfway with hot water. Then add a teaspoon of vinegar and the dye tablets, which will dissolve. Don’t have dye tablets? Add one teaspoon of food coloring into each cup of water and vinegar.

Tip: Try natural dyes. In a pan, arrange the eggs in a single layer and cover them with water. For red, add fresh beets; blue, canned blueberries; yellow, ground turmeric; green, fresh spinach. Bring to a boil, then simmer 15 minutes.

Step 4: Make your mark

Write or draw something on the egg with a white wax crayon before putting it into the cup. The wax resists the dye, so once the egg is colored, you’ll clearly see what you wrote.

Step 5: Add stripes

Put electrical tape around the egg, or simply put a rubber band—or several—around it before placing in the cups. When it’s dyed, remove the tape or rubber bands and you’ll have fun stripes!

Step 6: Make patterns

Add some stickers or brush some rubber cement onto the egg before you place it in the dye. When you remove the egg, simply peel off the stickers or hardened rubber cement and you’ll get interesting, creative patterns.

Step 7: Dye it

Place an egg into each cup. Leave it in for five to 20 minutes or as long as it takes to achieve your desired look. The longer it soaks, the darker it will be.

Tip: Add a teaspoon or so of vegetable oil into some of the cups of dye. The oil prevents the dye from sticking to certain spots on the egg, so when you remove it you get interesting designs and patterns.

Step 8: Remove

Using an egg dipper, slotted spoon, or tongs, take the eggs out of the cups and place them in an empty egg carton to dry.

Step 9: Enjoy

Hide your eggs for an egg hunt, put them in baskets, or simply peel your new creations and enjoy!

How To Hang Wallpaper – HomeServe Video Guide

Posted by admin on February 10th, 2012 and filed under Wall paper | 25 Comments »

wall paperhttp://www.homeserve.com – A DIY novice’s guide to hanging wall paper. Depending on the size of the wall you are papering, it shouldn’t take you more than a few hours to do

Step 1: You will need
Scissors
1 Tape Measure
1 Large soft wall brush
1 Fold-up pasting table
1 bucket
1 Plumb line
1 pencil
1 paper hanging brush
Wall paper paste
Wall paper
Step 2: Measure
Carefully measure the length required which is normally the height of the wall and cut from the roll. Make sure that you allow an extra 50 mm at both the top and bottom for final trimming. Always make sure that the pattern is the right way up and never, ever assume that the outside of the roll is the top. This could lead to all sorts of trouble and hilarity from others! Before cutting the next lengths ensure that the pattern matches up with previous ones.

Step 3: TOP TIP
After you’ve cut it, mark the back of the paper with a T at the top. This will avoid any confusion later on. Always keep offcuts – they may come in useful for small areas, such as above doors or around windows.

Step 4: Plan
Before you start the messy job of pasting, work out where you are planning to hang the wallpaper. For boldly patterned wallpapers choose a focal point such as a chimney breast for symmetry. If you have a plainer design start in a corner, usually behind the door.

Step 5: Plumb/Spirit Level
The last thing you want is wonky wallpaper so mark a vertical pencil line against a plum line or spirit level. The plumb line should be about 25mm less than the width of the roll away from the starting point so you end up papering over it and there’s no chance of it being seen through the seam later on.

Step 6: Pasting
Now you get to the messy bit. Spread a length of wallpaper face down on the table and start to brush the paste down the length and out towards the edges. Don’t pull the brush back across the edge of the paper as it will leave paste on the front of the paper. If you do manage to get paste on the front – don’t panic, just dab it off with a wet sponge.

Step 7: Soaking
Once pasted, fold the paper inwards, bottom to middle and top to middle. Then put the paper to one side to ‘soak’. Check the instructions to see how long it needs to be soaked for. Don’t try and skip this step to save time as by allowing it to soak, it minimises blisters on the hung wallpaper.

Step 8: Hang
Once the paper has soaked, pick up the top of the paper and lightly stick the top half of the length to the wall. Allowing the 50mm for trimming, slide the paper into position. Smooth down the middle with a paperhanger’s brush and then work out towards the edge, removing air bubbles as you go.

Step 9: Trim
Take the scissors and carefully run the back of them along the angle of the ceiling and the top of the wall and the skirting at the bottom. Gently pull the paper away from the wall and trim the excess and brush pack into place so it looks nice and neat.

Step 10: Tidy
Now all you need to do is tidy it up and make sure it looks like a professional has done it. Wipe the surplus paste from the surface of the paper and the ceiling and skirting with a damp sponge.
