REMOVING WALLPAPER
Overview:
Often old wallpaper that has become unfashionable or damaged needs to be removed. In order to do this, the basic goal is to loosen the wallpaper glue. If the original glue was designed to be removed easily, then the wallpaper will merely need to be scraped off; however, most old wallpaper glue was not designed with easy removal in mind, and will be a little more difficult to remove. There are several methods of wallpaper removal; however, this section comprises two of the most common methods. To remove wallpaper, there are a few materials and tools that will be needed.
Materials Needed:
The materials needed are: wallpaper cloth sheeting, chemical wallpaper stripper, a cleaning sponge and warm water.
Tools Needed:
The tools needed are: a short ladder, a bucket, a 6-inch taping knife, a hand tank sprayer filled with wallpaper stripper, and a circular wallpaper scorer.
The Project:
The wallpaper in this example has been on the wall of this house for over 40 years, so this scenario is an accurate example of the possibilities available to owners of older homes. To begin the removal process, run the wallpaper scorer over the entire surface area of the wall. Scoring the wallpaper is essential because it allows the wallpaper stripping chemical to penetrate the wallpaper and dissolve the glue, breaking the connection between the paper and the wall.
Next, take out the cloth sheeting from the bucket that has been presoaking in a mixture of water and wallpaper stripping chemical for a short time. Place the sheeting on the wall, beginning with the edge of the wall and ceiling. Smooth out the sheeting with your hand so that no area is left without contact to the sheeting. Now cover the entire surface area of the wall where the paper is to be removed.
After the surface has been covered with the sheeting, take the tank sprayer and thoroughly spray the area with the wallpaper stripper. Let the sheeting soak for 30 minutes to allow the wallpaper to absorb the wallpaper stripper.
After 30 minutes have passed, begin removing the sheeting, piece by piece, slowing peeling it off the wall. This will remove the wallpaper at the same time. A few pieces may remain. To remove them, simply take a taping knife and scrape them away. Last, take a wet sponge and wipe down the wall, cleaning off any remaining glue.
Second Technique:
The second technique is a simple technique for the removal of wallpaper that is already coming off the wall. In this technique the wallpaper will be scraped off while dry.
Begin by removing any loose wallpaper from the wall with your fingers and a taping knife. Next, run the wallpaper scorer over the entire surface area of the wallpaper being removed. After scoring the wall, continue scraping it with the 6-inch taping knife until the wall is bare. If this method does not work, then spray a liquid wallpaper remover over the remaining wallpaper and pull it off according to the instructions on the bottle, or use the first method. Once the wallpaper is removed, take a wet sponge and clean the wall of any remaining glue.
