Can anyone tell me how to correct walls that have been painted over wall paper paste?

One of our bathrooms has had Wall paper on the walls at one time. It seems as if they have painted over the paste instead of removing it. It is now starting to crack and peel. I need help with this. If I try and scrap it off it leaves a really bad spot n the wall. Should I sand it off? Or can I cover it with something and then repaint?

The best thing to do is to sand it. If you can’t get it sanded perfectly smooth, they have really great wall texture mediums you can apply to the freshly prepared walls, then paint them.

you might be able to score it and then apply wallpaper paste remover and scrap the walls. They sell little rollers that will score the wall. you will have a big mess no matter what. good luck.

Sanding it off would probably be best.

Use a scraper to scrape off the loose stuff. Then apply spackle to the entire wall. That’s the professional way to do it. I have done it numerous times.

I actually did see an episode of this same problem on
"Ask This Old House" a few months ago. You can reach them by sending an email to

Good luck. They right when I double checked the email address had a topic on the home page of removing wall paper from plaster walls.
